Golf clubs are invisible to AI search — and don't know it
A growing share of "who should I use" questions no longer go to Google first — they go straight to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude. For golf clubs, resorts and golf-sector brands, that's a problem almost nobody has actually tested.
Through AI Score, a diagnostic tool I built specifically for golf and local-service businesses, we ran real buyer-style prompts — "can you recommend a good golf club near [location]?" — against both Perplexity and ChatGPT for four UK multisite golf operators, none of whom had ever tested this before.
What the results showed
The same business got a materially different answer depending on which AI assistant a prospective member or visitor happened to open. Full methodology and quotes were covered by The Golf Business in June 2026.
Why this happens
AI assistants draw on a different signal set than traditional search: structured data, review depth and recency, third-party citations, and content that directly answers the question being asked — not a homepage built around a booking widget and a gallery. Most golf websites were built for Google in 2015, not for an AI model reasoning about "the best option near me" in 2026.
What actually moves the number
- Structured data AI models can parse — what the business does, where, and for whom.
- Brand authority signals — reviews, press coverage, and third-party citations AI treats as trust signals.
- Content depth — specific, citable answers to the questions buyers actually ask, not generic marketing copy.
- Baseline technical health — crawlability, speed, and indexing, the same fundamentals that underpin traditional SEO.
Standard SEO doesn't tell you what these models are actually saying about a business, because it was never built to measure that. It's a related but distinct discipline — and for golf and local-service businesses in particular, almost nobody is watching it yet.
I built AI Score to diagnose exactly this for golf and local-service businesses, then implement the fixes directly. If you haven't tested whether AI recommends your club, brand, or business, that's the first thing worth checking.
